New study demonstrates the superiority of DERMABOND® Adhesive
12th April 2010
New study that “demonstrates the superiority of DERMABOND® Adhesive over traditional subcuticular skin sutures in terms of time of closure, cosmetic appearance and patient satisfaction”.
A new study was published recently in the Annals of Thoracic Surgery (2009 Vol Nov pt 88(5) p 1445-9) from the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University Hospital of South Manchester and was led by Bhuvaneswari Krishnamoorthy.

Some of the highlights are:
- Randomised prospective study comparing closure with DERMABOND® Adhesive against subcuticular closure (53 patients in each group)
- Minimally invasive vein harvesting technique used – bridging technique
- Subcuticular suturing was performed using 3-0 Biosyn
- On day 7 wounds were assessed for cosmesis, all patients in the DERMABOND® Adhesive group scored 0 (excellent) compared with the suture group where there were no scores of 0 (32.1% scored 1, 41.5% scored 2, 22.6% scored 3 and 3.8% scored 4)
- DERMABOND® Adhesive provided significantly better cosmesis at both 7 days and 6 weeks post-op
- Closure time was significantly shorter in the DERMABOND® Adhesive group (10 mins 45 vs 13 mins 20)
- At 6 weeks, patients reported significantly greater satisfaction with their scar compared with the suture group
It really is an excellent study and “demonstrates the superiority of DERMABOND® Adhesive over traditional subcuticular skin sutures in terms of closure time, cosmetic appearance and patient satisfaction”.
