We acknowledge our position within the wider local community by respecting the natural environment, recycling materials and conserving resources.

ETHICON is recognised globally as an environmentally friendly manufacturer. We set high standards for our operating companies in the area of environmental responsibility — striving for performance that does not merely comply with regulations but reduces our environmental impacts. We have a responsibility to take care of our planet and preserve its beauty, resources and strength for future generations.

In addition to global environmental initiatives, local initiatives are implemented at many of our manufacturing sites and offices. For example at the ETHICON manufacturing facility at Livingston, Scotland, over half the footprint of the site is devoted to our environmental Biodiversity Site project. This award winning 10 year project is run in conjunction with a number of local organisations, schools and community groups. Our goal is to manage the land in such a way to create a diverse habitat system for a variety of wildlife.

We have introduced many other environmentally friendly initiatives at our Livingston facility, including:

• Use of roof mounted wind turbines and various energy efficient systems
• Reducing CO2 emissions by 10% since 2006 and have recently been awarded the ‘Carbon Trust Standard’ in recognition of this achievement
• Our suture cartons are manufactured from Virgin material using wood pulp from renewable resources
• Inks used in our printing process are free from heavy metals
• Our Ethylene Oxide sterilisation at our Scotland facility is one of the most modern in the world incorporating the use of non CFC sterilising methods and was the first non CFC sterilisation plant in the world.
